Fast Facts: UFC History and Notable Achievements

  • The UFC hosts most of the top-ranked MMA fighters in the world.
  • Dana White has been the UFC president since 2001.
  • The first UFC event was held in 1993 at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado.
  • MMA was legalized in New York on April 12, 2016. The UFC debuted at Madison Square Garden later that year on November 12.
  • Conor McGregor became the first UFC fighter to hold championships in two weight classes at the same time with a historic victory at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Already the Featherweight Champion, McGregor dominated Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC Lightweight Championship, securing his place in MMA history.
  • Henry Cejudo was a UFC double champion holding title belts in the bantamweight and flyweight divisions until December 19, 2019, when he was forced to vacate the flyweight title.
  • Amanda Nunes was a UFC double champion holding title belts in the bantamweight and featherweight divisions. Nunes defended her bantamweight title five times before losing it to Juliana Peña on December 11, 2021, only to regain it on July 30, 2022 by beating Peña. She retired as a champion and fought for the last time on June 10, 2023.
